Rebel Army List for Hail Caesar V1.1

After a long hiatus from this project, I am definitely re-engaged thanks to a couple of threads on the Lead Adventure Forum which in turn seems to have been sparked by the Baron's Wars skirmish game. I've also enjoyed immensely the new Ridley Scott medieval historical epic, The Last Duel - in fact I'm rockin' the soundtrack as I type.

Since my posting to Tonga for 3.5 years and the departure of my mate Matt for France, it has been a solo effort but now my good mate and erstwhile enemy Grant (the miniature menace) has expressed an interest. Frankly, any unit anyone want's to do to progress this is just one more I don't have to build and paint ... not that I don't enjoy it.

What's truly alarming and slightly perverse is how long I've been chipping away at this. In the meantime, I've changed painting styles (slightly), the way I base armies and most importantly, the rules I prefer. Whilst still enormously fond of WAB, it's not my primary vehicle as I've converted to full-blown Black Powder, Pike and Shotte and of course Hail Caesar.

I put the final orders in for this Rebel army this week and will put brush to figure before the year is out. Before returning to work in 2022, I swear I'll finish this army and the final figure will be the great man himself, Simon de Montfort.

In keeping with my conversion, I spent the better part of yesterday translating my army lists and amending them to Hail Caesar. I am now uploading them to Google Docs in the crazy notion that anyone else will be interested. So, I offer the new list to you if you've read this far. Please feel free to click on the link and download if you feel the need.

I'm satisfied that this list is done - there's a lot of research behind it. Of course, the inclusion of my Bishops is wildly speculative but not beyond the realms of possibility that they took the field on the day - but I doubt it. It's an option that's really just a bit of fun.

Good to see you back. have enjoyed reading your blog. Not previously been a period I am interested in but living not far from Lewes been fascinating learning about a battle near me.

Thanks Leigh, I'm very pleased you like it even half as much as I enjoy building it. Before much longer I'll have something substantial to look at instead of my thoughts.

Reserve Ward: Crossbow

  Any type of missile or bow armed fighting men are not recorded as having been present at Lewes in significant numbers or having made any significant impact. Nevertheless, they were sure to have been present if only to enabled harassment of an enemy force before the large bodies of spear and mounted soldiery came to grips with one another. There is every reason to assume that crossbow armed foot would have been included in the general call-to-arms on either side and so it is that I have elected to furnish my rebel reserve ward with a small unit. I love these sculpts from Crusader Miniatures (pack MCF031) which I ordered through Northstar Miniatures . They were no-fuss constructions - very little clean up needed and just glue in the crossbows. I chose of round off one of the more peaked helmets through filing just to add variety. I don't often get to build small units so this was a rapid treat for me. Next up ... some spear armed foot.

RESERVE WARD KIGHTS: The Other Half

  I seem to be forever saying , 'these figures have been a long time coming' and so they have. I think I finished painting them several months ago but only finished the bases today. Of all the shots to cover this post with, I decided my top-down view would best shop my injured horse with that gorgeous smile. For the visitors of this blog (as opposed to the followers), this posting is of the last half of my Reserve Ward knights of the rebel army at Lewes which I am also fielding as Simon de Montfort's bodyguard. Above is my depiction of William de Vescy charging in alongside Walter de Colville. All of these figures as with the rest of the Bodyguard unit are Crusader Miniatures and Gripping Beast (pretty sure). I'm pretty well wedded now to my lances of thicker wire and home made grapers. William de Goldingham: Research & Modelling

Ermine, three bars wavy, gules William de Goldingham was a knight of Essex (holding Chigwell Manor and seisin (freehold) of Burebache Wood) and may have come into the possession of family estates at Goldingham Hall (a manor in Bulmer parish, Yorkshire) and Ryshton, Yorkshire which was held earlier by Hugh de Goldingham. Nevertheless, the chief estate for the Goldinghams was Chigwell, formerly of William Brito and believed to have come into their possession as tenancy in demesne (or ownership) some time after 1254. The manor of Grange, which gave its name to Grange Hill, was originally part of Chigwell Hall and altogether the estates must have comprised significant land holdings and income as William de Goldingham and Aline (his wife) confirmed to Robert, Abbot of Tilty, gifts to the abbey of 3 messuages (house and land) and 234½ acres of land in Chigwell in 1258.
